On Wednesday the 8th of October 2014, members of the Diocesan Synod met at the Cathedral of the Holy Spirit in Dodoma to elect the next diocesan bishop. Chairing this special synod was the Bishop of Tarime, The Rt Revd Dr Mwita Akiri. The event was preceded by a special service, dedicating the whole election process before God. The candidates, whose names had been brought forward in a process which began at parish level and approved by the Diocesan Council and House of Bishops were The Revd Canon Dr Dickson Chilongani, The Revd Canon Moses Matonya and The Revd Canon Emmanuel Madinda. On this final day of the elections, The Revd Canon Dr Dickson Chilongani was elected as the 6th bishop of the Diocese of Central Tanganyika, following the death of the 5th diocesan bishop Godfrey Mdimi Mhogolo, who died earlier this year. Bishop elect Dr Chilongani has held various posts in the diocese, including being parish priest, principal of Msalato Theological College and diocesan Vicar General. Until the elections he has been serving as Provincial Secretary for the Anglican Church of Tanzania. Amongst other posts he has held, he has been lecturer in theology in Korea and at the St John's University of Tanzania, member of various diocesan boards and member of St John's University Senate and Council. His consecration and enthronement will take place in November this year. Dr Chilongani is married to Pendo and together they have two sons, Imani and John.
